As a mum, I understand just how overwhelming it can be when you are pregnant.
Pregnancy is a time where we find ourselves seeking information, extra support and guidance.

Being able to offer this one on one support as a professional birth attendant is a great privelige and is rewarding for both my clients and myself.

A professional child birth attendant or (doula) is a fantastic contribution to your support network. She is well informed and educated about pregnancy and the processes of birth.

As a doula, I understand just how important it is for all women to be well informed during their pregnancy and to feel empowered about how and where they choose to birth.
I share valuable information with the expectant parent/s by answering any questions relating to the pregnancy and upcoming birth, this information also helps assists parents with their birth plan.

As a doula I am there to support you and your partner by providing the knowledge, comfort, and education necessary for a fulfilling your birth experience, using techniques such as:

  • Massage
  • Breathing techniques
  • Optimum birth positions
  • Visualisation
  • Education & advocacy
  • Bush flower essences
  • Homeopathic remedies
  • Heat, water, heatpacks etc

This support allows the labouring woman's partner a greater sense of relaxation, and therefore an increased ability to care for the mother-to-be on an emotional level.

I am also there to support the people that are signifigant to the expectant parent/s and that may also be a part of the birthing process. I understand how important the support people are to the woman giving birth and how this effects the outcome of the birth.

I believe that all women need to feel supported and to be aware of what to expect when it comes to there bodies and what they may experience during this joyful yet at times overwhelming stage in their lives.

I believe all women deserve a doula and my aim is to nurture, guide and support each individual during the pregnancy, birth and postnataly.

    Whats A Doula?

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greekmeaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. As a doula I can also provide emotional and practical support during the postnatal period.

    A Doulas Role

    • To offer physical support

    • To offer emotional support

    • To offer information to expectant parent/s
about pregnancy and the process of birth

Doulas do not provide medical care and do not replace the role of other care providers such as midwifes, doctors, obstetricians etc....

Why is there a need for Doula's?

As childbirth has moved from home to hospital, a vital element of care has been lost from the whole process. Gone are the days where a woman would have continuous support from one carer throughout her labour. It used to be the case that the womenfolk within the immediate and extended family (mothers/sisters/grandmother etc...) would be on hand to provide the nurturing role for the new mother, to guide by experience and help with the practicalities that need to be performed before, during and after a woman gives birth to a baby.

    Benefits Of Having A Doula

Studies have shown that there are many benefits to having a doula as a support person at the birth.
    Statistics show...........
Reduces the overall Caeserean Section rate by 50%

    • Fewer Episiotimies

    • Reduces the length of Labour by 25%

    • Reduces the use of Synthetic Oxytocin by 40%

    • Reduces the use of Pain Medication by 30%

    • Reduces the use of Forceps and Vucuum Extraction by 30%

    • Reduces Epidural requests by 60%

Statistics shown in above information are quoted from 'Mothering the Mother'
(Klaus & Kennel) and are based on the continuous support of a Doula/Birth Attendant throughout the entire labour and birth

    Birth Poem

Snug and warm inside this womb
on the outside my mother blooms

    Swooshing sounds and beating hearts
my journey forward begins to start

    Primal mode begins to swirl
    oxytocin starts the potion

    Hormones begin to disperse
    as contractions are getting worse

    Gentle touch and dimming lights
    relaxing sounds, primal delights

    Endorphins racing, rushing around
    heavy breathing, mothers sounds

    Excitement brewing, adrenalin abound
    pressure building,  pushing down
as my head begins to crown

    Immersing forward, catch me safely
hand the mother her new baby
gently guided into place, looking around
    I see her face

Innate smells, insticts arise I see the bullseye
I find the prize, warm and sweet I begin to suckle
I feel safe and content this labour was well spent

The doula knows to let things rest
she's played her role, she's done her best
leave mother and baby with high levels now
    of hormones flowing all around

    Happiness is whats to come
    with all this hormonal rum
    oxcytocin, endorphins wow!
adrenalin and a splash of prolactin pow

The human body is so magic
pregnancy and birth doesn't need to be tragic
    so hire a doula today
all good things will come your way
